October 2024 | The Aftermath of Hurricane Helene and Our Commitment to Care

The end of September brought a whirlwind of uncertainty as Hurricane Helene swept through the Western North Carolina area, leaving many in devastation. We’re relieved to report that the entire S.O.S. team is safe, and we are incredibly grateful for that! The solidarity shown by our mountain community during this challenging time has been remarkable.

A week after the hurricane made landfall, we resumed our services and began checking in with residents across six counties: Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, Madison, Rutherfordton, and Transylvania. Thankfully, all our residents are safe, and their families have been informed. However, some areas were impacted more severely than others, and we want to acknowledge the staff members at these senior living facilities. Many are facing personal losses yet continue to show up for the residents, giving their all.

In light of the recent challenges, we want to reassure families that if they relocate their loved ones to other senior living communities, S.O.S. will travel with them. We are committed to providing flexible care and ensuring the continuity of oral care for their loved ones.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, many groups emerged to provide support, and one we’d like to highlight is Asheville Angels. This organization is dedicated to assisting senior citizens and solo agers affected by the storm. Our team has been collaborating closely with them to offer assistance. Volunteers are delivering food, water, and medications to those in need, showcasing the strength of our community. You can find their website below. Hurricane Helene has tested us, but our community’s resilience shines through. Neighbors are helping one another, sharing resources, and rebuilding together, step by step.
