November 2024 | Why Weekly Oral Care Should Be the Standard for Dependent Adults

In care communities, such as assisted living and memory care facilities, standard dental recommendations don’t always meet the needs of dependent adults. Many face challenges like limited mobility or cognitive decline that make daily oral care difficult, increasing their risk for serious issues like gum disease, tooth decay, and infections. At SOS ~ Senior Oralhealth Services, we believe weekly preventive care on-site is the right approach for these residents, and we’re working to make it the new standard.
The twice-a-year dental visit rule was created decades ago as a general guide, but it doesn’t account for the needs of dependent adults. For seniors in care facilities, standard dental visits are often hard to manage, meaning they often go without consistent oral care, which puts them at risk for infections and other health problems.
Without regular oral care, dependent adults can suffer from:
• Pain due to cavities and gum disease, making it hard to eat and speak.
• Health complications caused by oral bacteria that can lead to serious infections.
• Reduced quality of life because poor oral health affects comfort, nutrition, and overall well-being.
At SOS, we bring the care to the residents. Each week, our team of trained hygienists and assistants provides:
• On-site visits so residents don’t need to worry about transport. • Preventive treatments like cleaning, bacteria removal, and fluoride application. • Specialized care from professionals trained to work with dependent adults, providing not only dental but compassionate support.
Our weekly care helps dependent adults by:
• Reducing pain and boosting comfort so they can eat and smile confidently. • Preventing health risks tied to poor oral hygiene. • Preserving dignity by improving their oral health and quality of life.
SOS is dedicated to making weekly oral care the norm in all care facilities. We believe every resident deserves to feel comfortable and healthy, and our mission is to support that with accessible, high-quality oral care.
